For Summerside children, Design and Technology aims to inspire the interest of how the world works. DT teaches pupils to; develop the creative, technical and practical skills needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and at Summerside we want to ensure we are building on the skills taught in previous years in order to have practical, independent competence. For some of our children who are incredibly creative this subject gives them the platform to shine in the practical side of DT and can increase their confidence and self-esteem. It also aims to build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality products for a wide range of users. It includes reviewing, evaluating and testing their ideas and products and the work of others.

Within the planning, each year group has relevant key vocabulary to learn and use: this progression consolidates the previous year’s understanding, whilst adding new technical words to the pupils’ vocabulary. At Summerside we wish to expose children to a healthy way of eating and give our children the ability to make healthier choices and a sound knowledge of food and cooking.
